Tyler Bassett is a distinguished vocalist, pianist, composer, arranger, and educator based in New York City. Known for his smooth, velvety tone and charismatic stage presence, Tyler captivates both the ears and eyes of his audience. Since relocating to New York, he has made significant strides in his musical career.
Originally a saxophonist, Tyler’s musical journey began in Oregon, where, despite the lack of private instruction, he excelled. Self-taught, he earned several state-level awards for his saxophone playing. However, it was during his senior year of high school, after hearing the legendary Mel Tormé, that Tyler made the pivotal decision to transition from saxophone to voice.
Tyler’s talents earned him a scholarship to The New School, where he began refining his vocal craft and also started to learn jazz piano. His hard work and dedication quickly paid off, culminating in a standout moment as a featured soloist on “Cloudburst” during Jon Hendricks' celebration of life concert while sharing the stage with luminaries like Kurt Elling, Nancy King, and Jon Hendricks' daughters. He graduated with his BFA in 2020.
During the pandemic, Tyler continued to advance his skills in both voice and piano, leading to a generous scholarship offer to join the jazz voice program at the Manhattan School of Music. It was here that he discovered his passion for large ensemble writing. Despite having no prior experience in composition, his original big band piece, "You Made A Poet," was selected to be performed live at the prestigious Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola in 2024.
Drawing inspiration from a diverse array of musicians, including songwriters Dave Frishberg and Bob Dorough, crooners like Mel Tormé and Frank Sinatra, bebop greats such as his mentor and friend Sheila Jordan, and cabaret legends like Michael Feinstein and Blossom Dearie, Tyler brings a unique blend of jazz styles to his performances. His mission is not only to entertain and educate but also to preserve and revitalize the Great American Songbook for future generations.
